NUMBERS 5
Now Yehowah spoke to Moses, and said, 2 Command the sons of Israel to send away from the camp every person with defiled skin, and everyone who has a discharge, and everyone unclean by the dead; 3 you shall send away both male and female, sending them outside the camp, so that they do not defile their camps, in the midst of which I live. 4 And the sons of Israel did so, and sent them outside the camp; as Yehowah told Moses, so the sons of Israel did.
5 And Yehowah spoke to Moses, and said, 6 Tell the sons of Israel, When a man or a woman commits any of the sins against mankind, committing a trespass against Yehowah, and that person is guilty, 7 then each shall confess his sin which he has done, and make full restitution for his wrong, and add a fifth part to it, and give it to him to whom he did the wrong. 8 But if the man has no blood-relation to whom restitution may be made for the wrong, the restitution for wrong shall be made to Yehowah, for the priest, besides the ram of reconciliation, by which a reconciliation shall be made for him. 9 And every reserved-offering of all the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be the priest's; 10 and every man's holy gifts shall be his; whatever a man gives to the priest shall be his.
11 And Yehowah spoke to Moses, and said, 12 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them, If any man's wife is unfaithful, and commits a trespass against him, 13 and some man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband and is kept secret, and she has defiled herself but there is no witness against her, for she was not taken in the act; 14 and if the spirit of jealousy comes upon the man, and he is jealous about his wife because she has defiled herself; or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous about his wife although she has not defiled herself; 15 then the man shall bring his wife to the priest, and shall bring the required gift for her, a tenth of an ephah of barley-flour. He shall not pour oil over it, nor put frankincense on it, for it is a grain-offering for jealousy, a grain-offering for remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance.
16 And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before Yehowah; 17 and the priest shall take holy water in an earthenware vessel; and the priest shall take some of the dust which is on the floor of the tabernacle, and shall put it in the water. 18 And the priest shall set the woman before Yehowah, and shall unbind the woman's hair, and put in her hands the grain-offering for remembrance, which is the grain-offering for jealousy; and in the priest's hands shall be the water of proof that brings the curse. 19 Then the priest shall make her swear, saying to the woman, If no man has lain with you, and if you have not been unfaithful nor defiled yourself while under your husband's roof, be cleared by this water of proof that brings the curse. 20 But if you have been unfaithful while under your husband's roof, and if you have defiled yourself, and some man other than your husband has lain with you, 21 (then let the priest make the woman take the oath of the curse, and let the priest say to the woman,) may Yehowah make you a curse and a byword among your people, when Yehowah makes your thigh fall away and your belly swell;* 22 and may this water that brings the curse go into your bowels, to make your belly swell and your thigh fall away. And the woman shall say, Amen, Amen. * Perhaps euphemistic references to miscarriage
23 Then the priest shall write these curses on a scroll, and shall wash them off into the water of proof; 24 and he shall make the woman drink the water of proof that brings the curse; and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her for a proof. 25 Then the priest shall take the grain-offering for jealousy out of the woman's hands, and shall set the grain-offering aside before Yehowah, and bring it to the altar; 26 and the priest shall take a handful of the grain-offering, as a token of it, and shall burn it on the altar; and afterwards he shall make the woman drink the water. 27 And when he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and has committed a trespass against her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her for a proof, and her belly shall swell and her thigh shall fall away; and the woman shall be a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself, and is clean, then she shall be cleared, and shall conceive.
29 This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife is unfaithful while under her husband's roof, and defiles herself, 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes upon a man and he is jealous about his wife; then he shall set the woman before Yehowah, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. 31 So the man shall be clear from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.
