[33.] Nevertheless angels said that there is some hope for him, because whenever he had thought in the world from his spirit, that is, when left to himself in a tranquil state, he thought about good works and made them a matter of religion. That is also why he spoke and wrote so much about goodness of life, they said, even though he did not make it part of his doctrine, or something to be done for the sake of eternal life, on the ground that a person cannot do good of himself, and that if he does it for the sake of heaven, it is merit-seeking. On the other hand, however, when he came from the thought of his spirit into discourse with others, he then spoke as though one transformed about faith alone. He continues to do likewise today. It was for this reason that he rejected from the Word the Epistle of James and also the book of Revelation.
