4. GENESIS

Then the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gained* a man, Yehowah** 2 And she bore again, his brother Abel. Now Abel was a shepherd of the flock, and Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And after a certain time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground as an offering to Yehowah. 4 And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock, and of their fat. And Yehowah had respect for Abel and his offering; 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no respect. Then Cain was greatly incensed, and his face fell. 6 But Yehowah said to Cain, Why are you incensed, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, is there not an uplifting? But if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And to you is his desire, but you rule over him. 8 And Cain spoke*** to Abel his brother. Then when they were in the fields, Cain attacked his brother Abel, and killed him. 9 And Yehowah said to Cain, Where is your brother Abel? And he said, I do not know; am I my brother's keeper? 10 And he said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall not yield its strength to you any more; a wanderer and a fugitive you shall be in the world. 13 And Cain said to Yehowah, My iniquity is greater than I can bear. 14 See, thou hast driven me today off the face of the ground; and I shall be hidden from thy face; and I shall be a wanderer and a fugitive in the world; and anyone finding me will kill me. 15 And Yehowah said to him, Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him seven times. And Yehowah set a sign on Cain, lest anyone finding him should strike him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of Yehowah, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. * Heb qanah ** Or with Yehowah *** lit said

17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and bore Enoch; then he became a builder of a city, and named the city after his son, Enoch. 18 And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad was the father of Mehujael; and Mehujael was the father of Methushael; and Methushael was the father of Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives for himself; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah. 20 And Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was father of the tent-dwellers and their herds. 21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was father of all who handle harp and pipe. 22 And also Zillah bore Tubal-cain, instructor of every artificer in* bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said to his wives, * Or sharpener of every instrument of

Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;

you wives of Lamech, give ear to my speech;

for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a boy to my bruising. 24 For seven times shall Cain be avenged and Lamech seventy-seven times.

25 Then Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth-For God has appointed to me another child instead of Abel, because Cain killed him. 26 And to Seth also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then they began to call on the name of Yehowah.
