424. There are many people who fairly and faithfully perform their duties, and although in this way they do the deeds of charity, yet possess no charity in themselves. These are the people in whom selflove and love of the world are dominant, not the love of heaven; or if this is present, it is subject to another love, like a slave under his master, or a common soldier under his officer, and it resembles a door-keeper standing in a doorway.
