82. POLYGAMY (Polygamia).
Concerning polygamy (1019-1108 [CL 332-352]).
Only with one wife can there be given love truly conjugial, potency, friendship, confidence, and such conjunction of minds that two are one flesh (1021-1029 [CL 333, 334]).
Only with one wife can there be given the celestial beatitudes, spiritual satisfactions and natural enjoyments, which have from the beginning been provided for those who are in love truly conjugial (1030-1034 [CL 335]).
Love truly conjugial is not given except to those who are of the Christian Church (1042-1046 [CL 337]).
Hence it is not lawful for Christians to marry more than one wife (1047 [CL 338]).
If a Christian were to marry more than one wife, he would commit not only natural but also spiritual adultery (1051-1058 [CL 339]).
The sons of Jacob were permitted to marry more wives, because the Christian Church was not with them, and therefore love truly conjugial could not be given (1059-1064 [CL 340]).
Why polygamy was permitted to the Mohammedans (1059-1064 [CL 341]). Concerning the heavens of the Mohammedans, and that they who give up their mistresses enter into the second heaven (1065-1077 [CL 342, 343]).
