119. ZEAL (Zelus). JEALOUSY (Zelotypia).

Concerning jealousy (1738-1791 [CL 357-379]).

Jealousy is zeal; and zeal regarded in itself is as the fire of love burning (1741-1743 [CL 358]).

The burning or flame of that love, which is zeal, is a spiritual burning or flame, arising from an infestation and assault of the love (1744-1747 [CL 359-361]).

One's zeal is such as the love is; thus of one kind to one who has a love of good, and of another with one who has a love of evil (1748-1750 [CL 362]).

The zeal of the love of good and the zeal of the love of evil appear alike in externals, and both of them seem like anger and wrath (1751-1754 [CL 363, 364]);

But in internals the zeal of the love of good and the zeal of the love of evil are altogether unlike (1755-1757 [CL 363, 364]).

The zeal of the love of good conceals in its internals its own good, charity, and friendship; but the zeal of the love of evil conceals in its internals its own evil, revenge, and hatred (1758-1760 [CL 365-366]).

The zeal of conjugial love is called jealousy (1761-1764 [CL 367]).

Jealousy is as a fire against those who infest the love with a consort; and it is as a horrible fear for the loss of that love (1765, 1766 [CL 368]).

There is spiritual jealousy with monogamists, and natural with polygamists; there is also jealousy with beasts and with birds (1767-1772 [CL 369, 370, 378]).

They have jealousy who love their consorts, and they also who do not love them (1773 [CL 371, 372]).

There is jealousy also for mistresses, but not such as there is for wives (1774 [CL 377]). Jealousy with those who love their consorts is a just pain from sound reason, lest conjugial love should be divided and thus should perish (1775, 1776 [CL 371]).

Jealousy with those who do not love their consorts is from various causes (concerning which, 1777, 1778 [CL 373, 375]).

With some it is from various sickness of the mind (1779-1785 [CL 374, 375]).

With some there is no jealousy, and this too from various causes (1786 [CL 376]).

Jealousy with women and wives is not the same as with men and husbands (1787-1790 [CL 379]).
