11. BETROTHALS (Desponsatio).

Betrothals and nuptials (1111-1192 [CL 295-314]).

Selective choice belongs to the man, and not to the woman (1113-1117 [CL 296]).

The man ought to court and to solicit the woman respecting marriage with himself, and not the woman the man (1118-1121 [CL 297]).

The woman ought to consult her parents, or those who are in place of parents, and deliberate with herself, before she consents (1122-1125 [CL 298, 299]).

After a declaration of consent, pledges are to be given (1126-1128 [CL 300]).

Consent is to be confirmed and established by solemn betrothal (1129-1136 [CL 301]).

By betrothal the internal man of each is formed for conjugial love (1136-1140 [CL 301, 302]).

Causes (1139 [CL 301, 302]).

By betrothal the mind of one is conjoined to the mind of the other, so that a spiritual marriage takes place before the natural and bodily (1141-1150 [CL 303]).

This is the case with those who think chastely concerning marriage; it is otherwise with those who think unchastely (1150, 1151 [CL 304]).

Within the time of betrothal it is not allowable to be joined corporeally (1151-1156 [CL 305]).

After the completion of the period of betrothal nuptials ought to take place (1157-1160 [CL 306]). (See NUPTIALS.)
