DEUTERONOMY 18
The Levite priests, that is, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the fire-offerings of Yehowah, and his inheritance. 2 And Levi shall have no inheritance among his brothers; Yehowah is his inheritance, as he has promised him. 3 And this shall be the priests' due from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether it is a bull or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the stomach. 4 The first of your corn, your new wine, and your oil, and the first fleece of your sheep, you shall give to him. 5 For Yehowah your God has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand and minister in the name of Yehowah, him and his sons for ever.
6 And if a Levite comes from any of your gates throughout Israel where he has settled; and comes with all his heart's desire to the place which Yehowah will choose, 7 then he may minister in the name of Yehowah his God, like all his brother-Levites who stand there before Yehowah. 8 They shall have equal portions to eat; but the return from the sale of his patrimony shall be his alone.
9 When you come to the land which Yehowah your God gives to you, you shall not learn to follow the horrible practices of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire, or who practises divination, augury, enchantment, or sorcery, 11 or who casts a spell, or who is a medium, a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all who do these things are abhorrent to Yehowah; and because of these horrible practices Yehowah your God is driving them out before you. 13 You shall be perfect before Yehowah your God. 14 For these nations which you will dispossess obeyed those who practise augury and divination; but as for you; Yehowah your God has not allowed you to do so.
15 Yehowah your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers-you shall listen to him- 16 just as you asked of Yehowah your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly; when you said, Let me not hear the voice of Yehowah my God again, nor see this great fire any more, or else I shall die. 17 And Yehowah said to me, They have done well in what they have said. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among your brothers; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall declare to them all that I command him. 19 And whoever will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I will require it of him myself. 20 Yet if a prophet presumes to speak in my name a word which I do not command him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die. 21 And if you say in your hearts, How shall we know the word which Yehowah has not spoken? 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of Yehowah, if the thing does not happen or follow, that is the word which Yehowah has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, so you shall disregard it.
