NUMBERS 13
Then Yehowah spoke to Moses, and said, 2 Send men to explore the land of Canaan which I am giving to the sons of Israel; you shall send one man from each tribe of their fathers, each one being a prince among them. 3 So Moses sent them from the desert of Paran, according to the word of Yehowah, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel. 4 And these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zakkur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hon; 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Wophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Makhi. 16 These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses gave the name Joshua to Hoshea the son of Nun.
17 And Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up now into the Negeb, and go up into the hill-country; 18 and see what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, few or many; 19 and what the land is like in which they live, whether it is good or bad, and whether the cities in which they live are open camps or strongholds; 20 and whether the land is fertile or poor, and whether there is wood in it or not. And be strong, and take some of the fruit of the land. (Now this was the time of the first ripe grapes.)
21 So they went up and explored the land from the desert of Zin to Rehob, as far as the Pass of Hamath. 22 And they went up into the Negeb, and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came to the Valley of Eshkol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they brought also some pomegranates and figs. 24 The place was named the Valley of Eshkol,* because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there. * That is Cluster
25 And they returned from exploring the land at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came in to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, at Kadesh; and they brought back a report to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and said, We came to the land to which you sent us; it really does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who live in the land are powerful, and the cities are very strongly fortified; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekltes live in the land of the Negeb; and the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites live in the hill-country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan.
30 Then Caleb quietened the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and take it, for we are well able to overcome it. 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, We cannot go up against those people, for they are stronger than we are. 32 And they brought back to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had explored, and said, The land through which we passed to explore it is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people we saw there are men of great size. 33 And we saw the Nephilim there (the sons of Anak who come from the Nephilim); and in our own sight we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to be in their sight.
