When the soul begins his association with the spiritual, he is then first associated with good spirits who as yet do not know of what quality he is, and they perform all services for him, concerning which elsewhere [n. 815]. But when they know that he is not such that he can be in their company, he is then taken away by others. This is thus varied according to the nature of the life which he has acquired in the life of the body. At length he comes into a state of devastation, concerning which very much has been said elsewhere.
