146. [147.] 14. From a certain mountainous region was brought a multitude who led a moral life, not because of any religion but only for fear of the law or fear of the loss of reputation, honor and material gain, being thus without any Christian life, and who therefore perpetrated evils to the extent that they could do so without being exposed. Since they had not gained for themselves any communication with heaven by a life in accordance with religion, they were led around to the southern and western zones in order to explore whether they had any religion in their life, and because they did not, they were rejected.
