Those whose faith is no more than persuasion receive no inner enlightenment enabling them to know whether the things they teach are true or false, nor indeed do they care, provided that the common people believe them; for they have no affection for truth for its own sake. They also defend faith alone more firmly than others; and they value the good of faith, which is charity, only for what they might get out of it.
