9084. 'And when a man opens a pit' means if anyone receives falsity from another. This is clear from the meaning of 'a pit' as falsity, dealt with in 4728, 4744, 5038; and from the meaning of 'opening', when it refers to falsity, as receiving, at this point receiving from another since 'or when a man digs a pit' follows, which means receiving from oneself or fabricating oneself.
