220. Athanasius and learned men after him thought to conjoin the three Divines into one, by this, that the essence is one and that there is unity in trinity and trinity in unity. But who can ever think from this subtlety which cannot be comprehended, that therefore God is one? Can anyone? Rather, he thinks that there are three Persons and that each is God. This takes possession of the interior thought so that it sees not one God but three Gods. This is contrary to the Christian religion itself, that there is one God.
