That this signifies conjoined and appropriated to that nation, is evident from the signification of "drinking," as being to conjoin and appropriate to one's self truth, and in the opposite sense falsity (see n. 3089, 3168, 8562), here, the falsity of evil. By "the sons of Israel" is meant that nation without any other meaning, because that which is its own is here treated of. From these considerations it can now be seen what was the quality of that nation in respect to their interiors, because these are described in this chapter.
