And an earthquake.- That this signifies changes of state as to the things of heaven and the church in such, is evident from the signification of an earthquake, as denoting a change of the state of the church (concerning which see above, n. 400). That in the spiritual world there are lands (terroe), hills, and mountains, and that these are shaken when the state of the church with them is changed into evil and falsity; and that these earthquakes are meant by the earthquakes spoken of in the Word, may also be seen above (n. 400, 499).
